Petersburg Regional Alternative Program

The Regional Alternative Program (RAP) serves students from the cities of Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights, and the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, and Sussex. Students identified for enrollment have been expelled or long term suspended from their regular school program for possession of drugs, weapons, assaultive behaviors, or other serious behaviors against their local school board policy. Additionally, students who have been in juvenile corrections may be referred to RAP by their local School Board prior to consideration for re-enrollment in their regular school. The Regional Alternative Program has a capacity for 28 students, ages 13 – 18.

The Program

It is the purpose of the Regional Alternative Program to provide successful academic and therapeutic experiences in order to promote improved self-worth and positive behaviors which will ensure successful transition back into the school, community, and/or the world of work. Students and parents each sign a “contract” upon enrolling in the program. Additionally, students must define and justify realistic goals which they hope to achieve through the program. They are then consistently held accountable to the agreed upon behaviors listed in their contract. A “whole person” approach, which addresses behavioral, cognitive, emotional, physical, and social functioning, is utilized to meet the individual developmental needs of each pupil. The program incorporates a dual curriculum composed of academic and psychosocial components. This curriculum covers academic instruction, GED preparation, experiential group activities, therapeutic counseling, special focus groups, and individual vocational assessment and counseling as indicated by the student’s service plan.

The Staff

The Regional Alternative Program provides regular academic instruction or GED preparation in accordance with the student’s Alternative Education Plan, developed at enrollment. Pre-vocational instruction is included in the curriculum and supportive job placements may be available in the community as appropriate. Planned recreational and community based activities are also part of the program. Additionally, students receive bi-weekly individual and group counseling.
